Once more Wind Addiction is making history in kitesurfing in Puerto Rico, this time in conjuction with the Ponce Yatch and Fishing Club. This has been an historic event for sixty kiters, between 15 to 64 years of age. They took the challenge to cruise over 52 kilometers from Pozuelo Beach in Guayama to the Ponce Yatch and Fishing Club in Ponce, Puerto Rico. The average cruising time was between 3 to 4 hours of pure adrenaline.
We are also proud to be the first kiteboarding event in the world using the GPS technology in a kitesurfing event. Link with the information.
The southern coast of Puerto Rico from Guayama to Ponce, without doubt, is a world’s first class area to practice this challenging and rewarding sport. Not only did the event set a record of assistance of kiters but it also set a record of the longest distance organized for this sport in Puerto Rico.
During its course, the kiters cruised within the cays between Guayama and Salinas. They crossed Cayo Caribe to the south and Cayo de Barca to the north. They enjoyed the beauty of Cayo Pájaros, Cayo Morrillo, Cayo de Ratones, Arrecife Media Luna, Cayo Alfeñique, Cayo de Caracoles, Cayo Cabezazos, Cayo Berbería to finally pass north of Caja de Muertos before reaching their final destination of Cayo Cardona in Ponce.
Wind Addiction is a community of kitesurfers that enjoys the sport in a healthy way. It is a community that prides itself in not impacting the marine environment negatively. It is aware of the role that conservation plays in our lives and how it’s impact affects us and the creatures that inhabit our oceans. With that compromise in mind they set forward to collect trash, if any, in their path from Guayama to Ponce.
Following our compromise with the marine environment we had the group 7 Quillas Grupo Tortuguero set up base with information about the importance of conservation and protection of the Leatherback Turtle during its nesting season as it is an endangered species. 7 Quillas Grupo Tortuguero is a community group that collaborates with the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNRA) and with the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife in the conservation of the Leatherback Turtle.
This event certainly has marked our lives. Each kiter telling their part of the story, their downfalls or their achievements. What is important is the spirit… the Kiter Spirit of following a path, reaching a goal or still trying to achieve one… what bonds us together is that we are all one in camaraderie with each other and nature with us.
We congratulate the winners!
